Mass in honour of
St Josemaría

St Pius X Catholic Church, Brooklyn, Pretoria

SAINT
JOSEMARÍA
Josemaría Escrivá was born in Barbastro, Spain on January 9, 1902. He was ordained on March 28, 1925. He studied civil law along with his ecclesiastical studies, and in 1927, he moved to Madrid to obtain a doctorate in law. While there, he worked hard with the poor and sick, and also with students, workers, and professionals.
On October 2, 1928, he saw by divine inspiration, as the Pope's Apostolic Constitution Ut Sit affirmed, that God was asking him to spread the universal call to holiness, and that a new path would be opened up within the Church – Opus Dei – to spread this call throughout the world. History has borne out this vision: there are now around 90,000 people in Opus Dei and his spiritual message has reached millions.
Escrivá died in Rome on June 26, 1975. He was beatified on May 17, 1992, in St. Peter's Square. He was canonized in the same place on October 6, 2002, before a crowd of 350,000. During the Mass, John Paul II recalled that a good summary of St. Josemaría's message was his constant invitation that "the interior life, that is, the life of relationship with God, and the family, professional and social life, made up of small earthly realities" should not be separated, but should constitute a single "holy and God-filled" existence. St Josemaría's personality, his message and his priestly activity were inseparably united in him.
During the Second Vatican Council, Cardinal Owen McCann, then Archbishop of Cape Town, wrote to St Josemaría, requesting that Opus Dei begin its activities here. However, at that time it was not possible because Opus Dei works with all races, and South Africa was still under the Apartheid regime. St Josemaría prayed for the future of Opus Dei in South Africa up until his death.
With the transition to a democratic era in 1994, many people flocked to South Africa, including some faithful of Opus Dei: as diplomats, university lecturers, businesspeople, etc. This gave rise to regular trips from Kenya, to provide means of Christian formation for the faithful of Opus Dei and their friends. In later years these trips were made from Nigeria. At that time a number of people in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria expressed great interest in Opus Dei and its formational activities, and the possibility of beginning the work of Opus Dei in a more stable way was studied.
The first centre of Opus Dei for men opened in December 1998, in Linden, Johannesburg. In December 1999 the first centre for women was opened, also in Johannesburg. Since then, another centre has opened in Parktown, Johannesburg, for apostolic activities with male students, and, here in Pretoria, Brookside Hall for men and Arbor for women. Weekend retreats and longer seminars and courses are held at Ducks Dam Hall in Pretoria West, on the way to Hartebeestpoort.
Some Opus Dei members, working with other citizens, have established social welfare programmes to directly assist the underprivileged, particularly in the field of education. But above all, the faithful and friends of Opus Dei hope to make a positive impact by fully living their faith in their ordinary lives, and so bringing Christ to their homes, workplaces, friendships and all society.

COLLECT
O God, who raised up your priest Saint Josemaria in the Church to proclaim the universal call to holiness and the apostolate, grant that by his intercession and example we may, through our daily work, be formed in the likeness of Jesus your Son and serve the work of redemption with burning love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
FIRST READING: GN 2:4b-9, 15
At the time when the Lord God made earth and heaven there was as yet no wild bush on the earth nor had any wild plant yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth, nor was there any man to till the soil. However, a flood was rising from the earth and watering all the surface of the soil. The Lord God fashioned man of dust from the soil. Then he breathed into his nostrils a breath of life, and thus man became a living being. The Lord God planted a garden in Eden which is in the east, and there he put the man he had fashioned. The Lord God caused to spring up from the soil every kind of tree, enticing to look at and good to eat, with the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the middle of the garden. The Lord God took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and take care of it.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: PS 2:7 - 12
R. Praise the Lord, all you peoples!
I will announce the decree of the Lord: He said to me: “You are my Son. It is I who have begotten you this day.” R.
“Ask and I shall bequeath you the nations, put the ends of the earth in your possession. With a rod of iron you will break them, shatter them like a potter’s jar.” R.
Now, O kings, understand, take warning, rulers of the earth; serve the Lord with awe and trembling, pay him your homage. R.
Lest he be angry, and you perish, for suddenly his anger will blaze. Blessed are they who put their trust in God. R.
SECOND READING: ROM 8: 14-17
Everyone moved by the Spirit is a son of God. The spirit you received is not the spirit of slaves bringing fear into your lives again; it is the spirit of sons, and it makes us cry out: “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself and our spirit bear witness that we are children of God. And if we are children we are heirs as well: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, sharing his sufferings so as to share his glory.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: MK 1:17
R. Alleluia.
Come follow me, says the Lord, and I will make you fishers of men.
R. Alleluia.
GOSPEL LK 5:1-11
While the people pressed upon Jesus to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid, henceforth you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
OFFERTORY HYMN 1: FILL MY HOUSE
Fill my house unto the fullest
Eat my bread and drink my wine
The love I bear, is held from no one
All I have and all I do I give to you.
Take my time, unto the fullest
Find in me the trust you seek
Take my hands to you outreaching
All I have, and all I do, I give to you.
Christ our lord with love enormous
From the cross this lesson taught
To love all men, as I have loved you
All I have and all I do I give to you
OFFERTORY HYMN 2: IN BREAD WE BRING YOU LORD
In bread we bring you Lord,
our bodies' labour
In wine we offer you,
our spirits' grief.
We do not ask you, Lord,
who is my neighbour?
But stand united now, one in belief.
For we have gladly heard
your Word, your holy Word
And now in answer, Lord,
our gifts we bring.
Our selfish hearts make true,
our failing faith renew,
Our life belongs to you,
our Lord and King.
The bread we offer you
is blessed and broken,
And it becomes for us
our spirits' food.
Over the cup we bring,
your Word is spoken;
Make it your gift to us,
your healing blood.
Take all that daily toil,
plants in our heart’s poor soil,
Take all we start and spoil,
each hopeful dream.
The chances we have missed,
the graces we resist,
Lord, in thy Eucharist,
take and redeem.
PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS
Holy Father, accept these gifts that we offer in memory of Saint Josemaria, so that, through the sacrifice offered by Christ on the altar of the Cross and made present here in this sacrament, you may graciously sanctify all that we do. Through Christ our Lord.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON: MT 20:28
The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as ransom for many.
COMMUNION HYMN 1: JESUS MY LORD
Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All,
How can I love thee as I ought?
And how revere this wondrous gift,
So far surpassing hope or thought?
Sweet Sacrament, we thee adore;
Oh, make us love thee more and more.
Oh, make us love thee more and more.
Had I but Mary's sinless heart
To love thee with, my dearest King,
Oh, with what bursts of fervant praise
Thy goodness, Jesus, would I sing.
Thy Body, Soul, and Godhead, all,
O mystery of love divine.
I cannot compass all I have,
For all thou hast and art are mine.

COMMUNION HYMN 2: ANIMA CHRISTI
Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Passio Christi, conforta me.
O bone Jesu, exaudi me.
Intra vulnera tua absconde me.
Ne permittas a te me separari.
Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meae voca me.
Et jube me venire ad te
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te
Per infinita saecula saeculorum.
Amen.
(Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me; Blood of Christ, inebriate me; Water from the side of Christ, wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me; O good Jesus, hear me; Within Thy wounds hide me
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee; From the malignant enemy defend me; In the hour of my death call me; And bid me come unto Thee
That with Thy Saints I may praise Thee; Forever and ever. Amen. )
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
O Lord our God, may the mysteries we have received in this celebration of Saint Josemaria, strengthen in us the spirit of adoption as your children, so that, in faithful adherence to your will, we may advance joyfully along the path of holiness. Through Christ our Lord.
SALVE REGINA
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiæ,
vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevæ,
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia, ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos
misericordes oculos ad nos converte;
Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.
RECESSIONAL HYMN: OH LORD MY GOD
Oh Lord, my God,
when I in awesome wonder
consider all the worlds thy hands have made.
I see the stars;
I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul
My Saviour God to thee,
"How great thou art, how great thou art!"
And when I think
that God, his Son not sparing,
sent him to die, I scarce can take in it.
That on the cross,
my burden gladly bearing,
he bled and died to take away my sin.
When Christ shall come,
with shouts of acclamation
and take me home what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow,
in humble adoration
and there proclaim, "My God, how great Thou art!”
Prayer for
Saint Josemaría's intercession.
